Provision of free, fresh
drinking water is expected as part of the Government’s School Food
Standards, but it’s also recommended that it’s easily accessible,
hygienic and preferably chilled. The Health Education Trust has written
and produced free downloadable guidance for schools to get youngsters to
drink more.
Food in Schools 2005 found that regular water
consumption:
* Provides low cost refreshment throughout the day
* Promotes good health and wellbeing
* Reduces tiredness and irritability caused by thirst
* Can have a positive effect on pupils’ concentration throughout the day
* Demonstrates to parents and to the local community
that the school values pupil’s health and wellbeing
* Raises awareness of the importance of adequate fluid
* Supports the management of obesity
A pilot project in Leeds saw Yorkshire Water place Water Coolers in
three primary schools and monitor youngsters’ water intake. Not only did
the amount of water drunk significantly increase, but there were other
positive outcomes too and the company plans to put Coolers in all
primary schools in the area over the next three tears. Dr Martin
Schweiger, Consultant at Leeds Health Protection Unit said: "Children
who are dehydrated don’t learn well...If children don’t drink enough
water, the delicate enzyme systems their bodies depend on start to get
out of kilter."
